Sea goes back to back in Sceptre win
Author: admin
![]() An impressive winner of the G2 WSB Live Games Southern Cross Stakes last time out, Celtic Sea was all the rage for the 2021 Sceptre Stakes, with the bay daughter of Captain Al dispatched a 5-10 tote favourite. Speedy 3yo Trickster went out to make the running and led early, with jockey Gavin Lerena keeping Celtic Sea just off the pace. Lerena asked his champion to quicken 400m from home, with Celtic Sea hitting the front. From there, the -year-old kept finding more, with Celtic Sea going away to post a one and three quarter length win. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Celtic Sea (a South African champion the past two seasons running) has now won 12 (with six of her wins coming under Gavin Lerena) of her 26 starts for earnings of R3 289 413. The mare was a R325 000 buy from the 2017 National Yearling Sale, with Celtic Sea one of 102 stakes winners sired by multiple champion and deceased Cape Guineas winner Captain Al. Well done to the team back home, owners Antony and Angela Beck, and thanks to Eric Sands for the use of some of his facilities and ongoing hospitality. ![]() |
