Black Thorn stings rivals

Author: admin

Ten years after winning the July for the Tarry stable, Pomodoro provided Sean and his team with another notable success on July day when his son Black Thorn ran out an impressive winner of the G3 DSTV Gold Vase at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.
Fittingly enough, Black Thorn is owned by the Hollywood Syndicate, with Hollywood sponsoring the Durban July itself.

A good winner over 1800m last time out, and runner up in both the G3 The Citizen Gold Bowl and G3 WSB R10 000 1st Deposit Match Caradoc Gold Cup earlier in the season, Black Thorn was sent off a well backed favourite for Saturday's 3000m and duly delivered.

Under a confident ride from Keagan De Melo, the gelded four-year-old came with a wide run around the turn before staying on nicely to claim his biggest win to date by just over three-parts of a length.

It was a well deserved win for the uber consistent Black Thorn, who is also another feather in the cap of his sire Pomodoro.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Black Thorn looks a potentially leading contender for the Gold Cup at the end of the month.
