Legal soars to third LQP win

Making his first start for owners Braam Van Huyssteen, William Henderson and Hedley McGrath, reigning Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle demonstrated his remarkable will to win when winning the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate at Kenilworth for the Sean Tarry yard.

Now unbeaten in eight outings over a mile, the six-year-old has now won the LQP for the last three years running and remains at the top of his game.

Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, Legal Eagle was given a typically confident ride by regular rider Anton Marcus.

At one stage, Captain America appeared to have stolen a march on his rivals in the 1600m contest, with the big son of Captain Al galloping powerfully. Marcus, however, knew what he had under him and once asked the question, Legal Eagle responded gamely to nail Captain America and go on to post a 0.4 length of a win over 50-1 outsider Copper Force, with Captain America back in third.

The bay gelded son of Greys Inn won the 2018 G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate in a time of 98.14, and has now seven G1 wins to his credit.

Winning rider Anton Marcus, who has now won the Queen’s Plate on seven occasions, said, “Thanks to Gaynor Rupert and her team on a wonderful festival. I anticipated that Captain America would stretch us – I also expected that the Snaith team would want a good pace. It’s a fine line with Captain America – you can’t move too late or too early! But I was sitting on a very special horse. A a great job done by Sean Tarry and his team.”

Sean was quick to thank the entire team behind him after the win.

The 2018 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate was a first G1 win for part-owner Braam Van Huyssten, who was on course to lead his champion in with William Henderson. Unfortunately, the third partner, Hedley McGrath, was overseas for the race.

The six time Equus Champion Legal Eagle now looks on course for the G1 Sun Met, to be run as a weight for age race for the first time in 2018.

Saturday was also a huge triumph for sponsors L’Ormarins who once again put on a wonderful day.
