Sean wins Acacia, Aquanaut Handicaps

Author: admin

Sean enjoyed a memorable feature race double at Turffontein on Guineas day this past Saturday when saddling Simply Royal and Tambalang to win the G3 Acacia and Listed Aquanaut Handicap respectively.

Sean saddled both the first and second in the Acacia Handicap, while also sending out Aquanaut third place finisher Witchcraft.

The Al Adaayit South Africa owned Simply Royal stamped herself as a hugely valuable stud prospect when she came with a late rattle to land her first feature race win in Saturday’s R250 000. She was well ridden by Summer Cup winning jockey Raymond Danielson, who got his mount up late to down her front running stable mate Redberry Lane and win by half a length.
While Simply Royal impressed in victory, the front running runner up Redberry Lane was game in defeat, and this consistent, if luckless, daughter of Western Winter has now been second in her last five starts!
Bred by the Ascot Stud, the four-year-old Simply Royal is a daughter of champion sire Silvano and Al Mufti’s G1 winning daughter Royal Fantasy (she is a full-sister to Guineas runner Royal Crusade). The filly has now won four of only seven starts and has earned more than R360 000 in prize money.

Sean not only trains, but part-owns, Tambalang-the winner of Saturday’s Aquanaut Handicap.
Bred by Lammerskraal Stud (who bred and own Redberry Lane), the consistent four-year-old was trying the 2400m trip for the first time on Saturday and proved to relish the step up in distance. Runner up, to subsequent Fillies Guineas winner Smiling Blue Eyes, in the 2016 G3 Fillies Mile, Tambalang powered home to post her first feature race win by 1.25 lengths, with stable mate Witchcraft further back in third.

In the process, Tambalang, who was beating some hard-knocking male rivals, provided Lyle Hewitson with another winner in his attempt to break the number of winners for an apprentice in a season.

Racing in the blue and red silks of Chris Van Niekerk, Tambalang has now won or placed in 12 of 16 outings –and with a stamina in her favour, can surely win again soon. A daughter of Lammerskraal’s G1 winning sire Go Deputy, Tambalang’s second dam is the former Tarry affiliated G1 winner Divided Loyalty.
