Day of seconds still a positive day!

While the yard failed to get on the winners board at Turffontein on Saturday, a number of runners put up commendable efforts in defeat.

The ultra game mare Witchcraft, third in the Listed Aquanaut Handicap one week earlier, showed plenty of heart, when a brave second, after making much of the running, in the Sun Chariot Handicap over 2400m in going officially described as very soft.

Owned by Chris Van Niekerk, Bruce Gardner, and Ken Truter, the five-year-old tried to make all but was just run out of it late by Emerald Bay (who was receiving 7.5kgs). Winner of the 2016 G3 Gold Circle Oaks, Witchcraft took her earnings to over R620 000 –and she really deserves to win another decent prize soon.

The stable’s July winner Pomodoro has made a pleasing start with his first 2yos, and his promising Royal Italian put up a pleasing Gauteng debut when running on for second in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes. As a son of a July/SA Derby winner, Royal Italian should surely improve for a step up from the 1000m of Saturday’s race, and he looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

Urban Oasis gave Sean a 2yo feature race runner up double, when the daughter of Querari ran second in Saturday’s Listed Ruffian Stakes –beaten only by the China Horse Club owned eye catching winner Dagmar.

The yard’s runner up stint continued when Myfunnyvalentine ran a brave second, over a trip short of her best, in the Listed Bauhinia Handicap. The Michael Leaf/Klawervlei Stud owned filly was beaten only by Swallow Stakes winner Covered In Snow in another good effort from the well bred daughter of Captain Al and G1 winner Give Me Five.

Another to catch the eye from the yard, was Silvez, a 3yo daughter ofSeventh Rock who made a pleasing debut to finish third over 1160m on Saturday.
