Change of luck for Cirillo

Author: admin

Sean enjoyed a memorable day on Saturday when responsible for three winners.
The Tarry stable’s treble was crowned by an impressive all the way win for Cirillo in the R2.5 million CTS Ready To Run Stakes at Kenilworth.

The Riverton Stud bred colt had previously been unlucky not to win several graded contests and had long looked overdue a decent feature-race win.

Cirillo always looked the best horse in the 1400m race with his biggest issue seemingly being his very wide draw of 16.
However, the colt received a superb ride from in-form big race king Anton Marcus, with Marcus quickly taking Cirillo to the front and overcoming his draw with apparent ease.

Cirillo, whose form saw him dispatched the 57-20 favourite, kept galloping over the closing stages to post an emphatic two and three quarter length win over the progressive Dynasty colt Majestic Mozart, with the latter another having to overcome a poor draw on the old course –no easy task!

Like his sire Pomodoro, Cirillo is owned by Chris Van Niekerk, with the latter spending just R60 000 to acquire the bay from the 2017 CTS Ready To Run Sale. His win in the Ready To Run Stakes took Cirillo’s earnings to an impressive R1 761 750.

Cirillo is a tremendous tribute to Pomodoro as a sire, with his dam Miss Wordsworth (by failed stallion Lake Coniston) having failed to win a race, or, prior to Cirillo, breed a winner.

Pomodoro, South Africa’s Champion First Crop Sire last season, also made his mark over the weekend at Friday’s CTS Ready To Run Sale where the July winning son of Jet Master ended up as the second Leading Sire by Aggregate.

Sean, whose charge Chimichuri Run ran a smashing race when a close up second in Saturday’s G2 Concorde Cup when going down only narrowly to the unbeaten One World, also had a pair of winners at Turffontein on Saturday.

The Tarry yard sent out Pilou and Ruby Dancer, ridden by Muzi Yeni and Luke Ferraris respectively, to claim the fifth and sixth races respectively, with Pilou racing for Mike and Norma Rattray and well related filly Ruby Dancer owned by Chris Van Niekerk.
