Italian bounces back to winning ways

The useful 3yo Royal Italian, who showed promise as a two-year-old, got back to winning ways when he won the Tab Pays The Full Dividend, No Limits MR 79 handicap over 1400m on Saturday.

Given a fine ride by jockey Piere Strydom (who had also partnered the gelding’s sire Pomodoro to victory in the 2012 Vodacom Durban July), Royal Italian was always handy in Saturday’s race, and hit the front with 100m to run, scoring a half-length win in the process.

The race, the ninth on the card, proved a good one for the Tarry yard, with Sean also saddling third place finisher Aurora Australis.
Bred by Highlands, and from his sire’s promising first crop, Royal Italian, whose merit rating had dropped from 90 to 75 for Saturday’s race, showed good promise at two when his efforts included a runner up finish in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes and a fourth place finish, to multiple G1 winner Soqrat, in a juvenile plate over 1400m.
A subsequent gelding operation had appeared to set Royal Italian, but hopefully Saturday’s win has set the three-year-old on the way to bigger and better things.

Owned, like Pomodoro, by Chris Van Niekerk, Royal Italian was a R100 000 buy from the 2017 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale.

Sean also saddled the top class filly Celtic Sea to a fast finishing third place finish in the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, the first leg of South Africa’s Triple Tiara, on Saturday.
The multiple graded stakes winning daughter of Captain Al hit the front with 200m left to run but then appeared to fail to stay and Sean will now drop her back in trip.

Another from the yard to catch the eye on Guineas day was Al Adaayit South Africa's promising Silvano colt Zillzaal. Still lightly raced and immature, Zillzaal ran a great race to finish fourth in the G2 Gauteng Guineas and Sean expects him to show good improvement in the G1 SA Classic next month.
