Liege lands Lonsdale Stirrup Cup

The Tarry yard’s great run of form in KZN features continued at Greyville on Saturday, when Liege bounced back to winning ways with an authorative score in the G3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup.
Under Raymond Danielson (who had won the 2017 G1 Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup on Liege), the six-year-old Liege had looked a picture going to post and came back even better.
When asked for his effort, Liege quickened up smartly and went on to record a 2.1 length at the expense of dual G3 winner Gimme One Night, with Silver Rose taking third spot.

It was a first win for Liege since his Summer Cup score, and the gelding’s triumph is a tribute to the team who persevered with him.

Bred by Maine Chance Farms, the son of Dynasty is a half-brother to the Summerhill Stud based sire Lance and to Thukela Handicap winner Lockheed Jetstar.

Sean said after the win, “He just did not bounce back to form after the Summer Cup and the step up in trip had bought a sparkle back to him. Very well ridden to Ray, the horse was very well weighted here. He had excuses for his two last efforts. It has been a great week!”

Liege’s win was another notable success for owner Chris Van Niekerk, whose colours filled the first, second and third placings in last weekend’s G1 Tsogo Sun Sprint.
