Ikigai strolls home

Author: admin

The Tarry yard had an eye catching winner at Turffontein on Tuesday, when the Chris Van Niekerk owned Ikigai ran out an impressive winner of Tuesday’s sixth race, a graduation plate over 1450m.

Under a typically polished ride from Piere Strydom, the three-year-old Vercingetorix colt was always travelling smoothly, and when Piere asked him the question, Ikigai accelerated smartly and pulled away to post a convincing one and a quarter length win.
Stable mate Russian Beat finished third –a good run over a trip perhaps short of his best.

Bred by Klawervlei, the progressive Ikigai (who defied the ratings to win) has now won two of only four starts (he clipped heels when finishing second to Astrix three starts back and was hanging out when beaten by talented filly True To Life) and he looks capable of going from strength to strength –if Tuesday’s win is anything to go by.
