3 Summer Cups in a row!

Author: admin

Sean and his team made it 3 Summer Cup wins in a row, when sending out Zillzaal to capture the G1 Gauteng Chris Gerber Summer Cup at Turffontein on Saturday.
The Tarry yard had previously won the 2017 Summer Cup with Liege and last year’s race with Tilbury Fort.

Under an inspired ride from apprentice Denis Schwarz, four-year-old Zillzaal went out to make the running and kept finding more in the closing stages to hold off champion, and favourite, Soqrat and score by just under half a length.
Fittingly, Zillzaal (who was winning the first G1 race of his career) races for his breeder Al Adaayit South Africa –whose yellow and blue silks are the inverted colours of the late Chris Gerber –for whom the Summer Cup was run in honour of.

Like Sean’s first Summer Cup winner Aslan, Zillzaal (who has really benefitted from gelding) is a son of Maine Chance Farms’ four times champion sire Silvano. The latter is also the sire of Zillzaal’s stable mate (and fellow Al Adaayit bred and owned four-year-old) Al Mutawakel who ran a good race when third in Saturday’s big race.

Zillzaal was one of four winners for Sean and his team on Saturday, with the Tarry yard enjoying a trio of graded wins on the day.

Flashy grey Mardi Gras made a big impression when romping home to an easy win (on his debut for Sean) in the G2 New Turf Carriers Merchants with stablemate Warrior’s Rest finishing second.

It is a second year that the Tarry yard has dominated the Merchants, with Sean sending out Africa Rising and Captain And Master to finish first and third in the same race last year.
Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, and sired by that farm’s resident sire Oratorio, Mardi Gras races for Messrs L&W Zackey, GJ Nassif, J Nassif, and ZL Nassif.

Captain And Master’s three-parts brother Shango made a bold showing on Saturday when running out a convincing winner of the G2 TAB/Betting World Dingaans for owners Chris Van Niekerk and Bruce Gardner. The colt, from the first crop of champion sprinter Captain Of All, was ridden to victory by Gavin Lerena, with Lerena also victorious in the Merchants on Mardi Gras.

The talented, and well-bred Silver God provided the yard with a fourth win on Summer Cup day when Silvano half-brother to William Longsword scored an easy win in the tenth race on the card for owner Chris Van Niekerk.
