Ikigai romps to Tony Ruffel win

Author: admin

Sean and his team enjoyed another good day at Turffontein on Saturday, when the Tarry trained pair of Ikigai and Westlife ran 1-2 in the G3 Tony Ruffel Stakes for Sean’s stalwart owner Chris Van Niekerk.
The Klawervlei Stud bred Ikigai was most impressive in mowing down his Pomodoro sired stablemate to win by four and a half lengths, and Ikigai looks a really exciting future prospect.
A son of Vercingetorix, Ikigai has now won three of only five starts and he was steered to victory by Luke Ferraris.
Sean, Chris and Luke had previously looked unlucky not to win the G3 Three Troikas Stakes on the same card, with their Victoria Paige a fast finishing second in that 1400m feature.
Fourth in last season’s G1 Thekiwni Stakes, the Ascot Stud bred Victoria Paige stamped herself a likely Fillies Guineas contender with a strong finishing effort in Saturday’s race.

Her stable mate Spiritofthegroove also caught the eye when taking fourth in the Three Troikas and that grey daughter of Visionaire looks on course for a good season ahead.

The yard also enjoyed success when the flashy River Jorddan stormed home to win Saturday’s third race, a MR 78 handicap over 1600m, under Summer Cup winning rider Denis Schwarz.

A son of Sean’s former charge Skitt Skizzle (an underrated stallion who continues to impress from limited opportunities), the Bosworth Farm Stud bred River Jordan has now won two in a row for owner Chris Van Niekerk.

Well done to the whole team, who have done such a great job keeping things flowing over the past few months.
