Ikigai impresses in Guineas triumph

Author: admin

Sean, Luke Ferraris, Chris Van Niekerk and Klawervlei Stud teamed up to win a pair of feature races at Turffontein on Wednesday evening, with Ikigai landing the G2 Gauteng Guineas (1600m) and Silver God claiming the Listed Wolf Power 1600.

The lightly raced Ikigai, a hugely impressive winner of the G3 Tony Ruffel Stakes at his previous start, made it win number four from just six starts when bounding clear to land the Gauteng Guineas by a 1.75 lengths over SA Nursery/Graham Beck Stakes victor Frosted Gold.
A son of the Klawervlei Stud bred Equus Champion Vercingetorix (whose sire Silvano is also the sire of Silver God), the exciting Ikigai is out of the Al Mufti mare Al Shiba -herself a daughter of G3 Jacaranda Handicap winner Azabu Park.

Stablemate Silver God, a regally bred half-brother to 2 G1 winners including Cape Guineas winning sire William Longsword, also caught the eye when he picked up his first feature race win by landing the Wolf Power 1600 on Wednesday evening.
The five-year-old Silvano gelding was given a supremely confident ride by Luke Ferraris, who always had Silver God well positioned, and when asked for his effort, Silver God stayed on gamely to register his fifth win by three-parts of a length.

Sean, Luke and Chris went close to having a Guineas double with the poorly drawn Victoria Paige running a cracker to finish a close up third in Wednesday's G2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas (1600m).

The yard's former star Siren's Call also made her presence felt on Wednesday -her two-year-old daughter Siren Of Greece (by Duke Of Marmalade) caught the eye when running on nicely for third, on debut, over 1160m for owner-breeder Drakenstein Stud.

Well done to the team back home, whose ongoing hard work paid off handsomely on Wednesday.
