KZN Glory For Princess Calla

The Tarry-trained Princess Calla, who had such a wonderful season in 2022-2023, was honoured at the 2023 KZN Racing Awards ceremony, held at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Friday night. Princess Calla was named KZN's Champion Horse Of The Season, following a season which saw the Mario Ferreira-owned mare win all three of her races run in KwaZulu-Natal.

Following a facile win in the G1 South African Fillies Sprint, Princess Calla made it back-to-back G1 scores when she ran out a near two-length winner of the G1 Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes on Hollywoodbets Durban July day. She ended her season on a real high when Princess Calla stormed home, to down some top-class male rivals, to win the G1 The HKJC Champions Cup by over a length and a quarter.

Champions Cup runner-up See It Again was also honoured on Friday night, with that son of Twice Over named both Champion Three-Year-Old Male and Champion Middle Distance Performer. A daughter of Flower Alley, Princess Calla is also a strong contender for Equus Award honours, with the brilliant bay having won no fewer than six graded races during the 2022-2023 season, and winning G1 races from 1200m to 1800m.
