Stable Stars Draw Wide In July
The Tarry Yard will be looking for a third July win when Sean saddles Cousin Casey and Future Pearl (their stablemate Hotarubi is the second reserve runner) in the 2024 G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July, set to be run at Greyville on July 6th.
The stable won the July previously with Pomodoro (2012) and Heavy Metal (2013). Sean Tarry has enjoyed a great season and is looking for his third winner as he saddles a power duo of Cousin Casey and recent G3 Tabgold Derby winner Future Pearl, the latter to be ridden by Grant van Niekerk, who was originally engaged to ride first reserve, Hluhluwe.
Both Cousin Casey, runner up in both the G1 Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge and the G2 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes at his last two starts, and KZN specialist Future Pearl have come good at the right time, and both horses look to have lively chances in the July this year.
Unfortunately, champion Cousin Casey, whose jockey S'Manga Khumalo partnered the Tarry-trained Heavy Metal to victory in the 2013 July, has drawn a wide barrier of 15, with Future Pearl suffering an even worse draw of 18.
Speaking to the Sporting Post after the draw, Sean said of his charges, "“A few months ago, I was looking at an average Hollywoodbets Durban July attack. But things develop, and I am very happy with two serious contenders and a decent
reserve runner."
