Tarry’s Winter Double

Fresh off having a pair of winners at Turffontein on Saturday, the Tarry team's good form continued at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

Classy filly Winter Greeting gained a well deserved first black type win when she won the Listed KwaZulu-Natal Stakes (1000m), and two races later, the Tarry trained Mid Winter Wind claimed the G3 Byerley Turk (1400m) in smart fashion. Both Winter Greeting and Mid Winter Wind were sired by multiple Equus Champion What A Winter.

Winter Greeting, a winner of her first three starts, was steered home by Serino Moodley, while S'manga Khumalo guided Mid Winter Wind to victory on Sunday. Racing just off the pace early on, Winter Greeting hit the front 200m from home and powered home down the inside to win by nearly two and a half lengths.

Bred by Syrilla Stud, and owned by Lammerskraal Stud, four-year-old Winter Greeting has now won five of just nine starts, with the filly having originally been carded to race in the Cape earlier this year. Winter Greeting, a really good looking filly, will now target feature races in the KZN Winter Season, with a race in Gauteng also on the cards for her.

Sean and his team have done a great job with Winter Greeting, who is a filly with her share of issues. Her stablemate Mid Winter Wind took a step up in class with aplomb when he ran out a convincing winner of the G3 Byerley Turk for owner-breeder Drakenstein Stud.

In the process, the gelding made it four wins in a row, with the progressive Mid Winter Wind having now won four of just seven starts. Mid Winter Wind, who is out of the Dynasty sired champion Lady In Black, looks destined for bigger and better things.
