Allied Steelrode -Onamission Charity Mile Final Field Announced
The Tarry stable is set to be represented by three runners in the 2024 G2 Allied Steelrode-Onamission Charity Mile, to be run at Turffontein on November 2nd.
The Tarry runners for the Charity Mile this year are Hotarubi, Litigation, and Celtic Rumours, while Sean's charge Let's Go Now is the second reserve runner for the R1 000 000 contest.
Calvin Habib will partner Hotarubi, while Litigation gets the services of Denis Schwarz, and last out G2 Betway Joburg F And M Spring Challenge queen Celtic Rumours will be steered by Philasande Mxoli.
The 2024 edition will feature 19 deserving charities, all benefiting from an exciting day of racing, competition, and generosity. This remarkable event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of global steel manufacturer Allied Steelrode. A Barrier Draw held at Turffontein Racecourse on Wednesday, October 23, determined the pairings of the 16 runners with their respective beneficiary charities. The charity linked to the winning horse will receive R100 000, while all other charities with horses in the final field (including reserve runners) are guaranteed an increased minimum of R30 000, up from R20 000 last year.
Hotarubi will race for Cotlands, Litigation for Jicama89 and Celtic Rumours for The Hamlet Foundation.
Cotlands is an organisation working towards making South Africa a more equal society by creating access to play-based early learning opportunities for young children. Through the generous investments of donors and partners, Cotlands initiates and facilitates innovative, play-based early learning opportunities for young children. Children are provided access to toy library and playgroup programmes aimed at improving school readiness. The programmes are designed to ignite potential through play by enhancing children’s social-emotional development as well as their cognitive skills, which include creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.
Jicama89 is another charity with a powerful mission. A Non-Profit Organisation, Jicama89's primary purpose is to support deserving organizations in their efforts to meeting the needs of those less fortunate and able. Jicama 89 started assisting the Sibonile School for Visually Impaired and Disabled Children in 2007 and has been actively involved in supporting the children in the care of the Sibonile School, which is based in Klipriver to date. Jicama 89 has recently adopted 2 additional schools: the 2nd school, The Harvey Cohen Centre, which is based in Eldorado Park, and the 3rd school, Isizwe Setjhaba SID School, based in Midvaal. This profile seeks to make individuals and the public aware of the task of educating children with visual impairment, mental and physical impairment, and severe intellectual disabilities.
Founded in 1954, The Hamlet Foundation has grown and developed to include a school for 270 intellectually disabled children, a residential centre for 54-60 intellectually disabled adults, and a protective workshop for 200 intellectually disabled adult workers.
This year's Charity Mile field is headed by South Africa's reigning Horse Of The Year Dave The King, with that champion set to shoulder 63kgs in the Turffontein feature.
A jockey is yet to be announced for Let's Go Now, should she make the final field. (Let's Go Now will run for the Ekukhanyeni Relief Project if she makes the cut.).
This year's Charity Mile will be run as the seventh race on a card, which includes such features as the G3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes, G3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes, G3 Allied Steelrode Yellowood Handicap, Listed Allied Steelrode Golden Loom Handicap, and Listed Allied Steelrode Java Stakes.
