Equus Glory For Stable Stars

Sean Tarry Racing enjoyed a tremendous night on Thursday, when three equine stars, either currently or formerly hailing from the yard, were honoured with Equus awards.

Classy colt Proceed, who won three of seven starts last season, including both the G1 Gold Medallion and G3 TAB Protea Stakes, was named Equus Champion Two-Year-Old Colt on Thursday.

Bred by his part-owner Laurence Wernars, Proceed was the soul of consistency in his first season of racing, with the Gimmethegreenlight son also finishing runner-up in the G2 Durban Golden Horseshoe. Well done to the Wernars family who race this wonderful colt.

Now standing at Ridgemont, Thunderstruck just beat out his former stablemate Lucky Lad to be named Equus Champion Sprinter for 2023-2024. The son of Rafeef and Varikate was the model of consistency last season, with Thunderstruck winning or finishing second in all seven of his starts in 2023-2024. Thunderstruck, victorious in the 2022 G1 Gold Medallion, showed his class when landing both the G1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint and G2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes and also finished a close second in the G1 World Pool Moment Cape Flying Championship. Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, Thunderstruck raced for Wilgerbosdrift.

The yard's former champion, Princess Calla, who is currently preparing to race in North America, was named Equus Champion Older Female for a second year running on Thursday. South Africa's Horse Of The Year in 2022-2023, the daughter of Flower Alley, picked up her fifth Grade One victory last season when Princess Calla romped home to claim the 2024 G1 City Of Cape Town Majorca Stakes on G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met Day.

Bred by Maine Chance Farms (Pty) Ltd, Princess Calla won 12 and was placed in a further 14 of her 28 local starts. She will be remembered as a true champion.

The 2024 Equus Awards were held at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse, and congratulations to all the winners honoured at Thursday night's event.
