High Hopes For Geriatrix

Sean Tarry’s unbeaten Equus Champion, and one of the talking horses of last term, Vercingetorix’ smashing pint-sized flyer Mrs Geriatrix could have the Cape Fillies Guineas on her radar this season.

Undefeated in five starts, the Clifton Stud-bred filly, a bargain R200 000 purchase from the 2022 BSA National Yearling Sale, has returned from a break on the farm following her victory on Hollywoodbets Durban July day and is back in work.

She’s happy and well and it is planned that she will make her 3yo season debut on the Betway Spring Challenge raceday at Turffontein on Saturday 7 October. Depending on her comeback run, we may well look at the Cape Fillies Guineas,” Sean Tarry told the Sporting Post on Monday in response to a question regarding the Equus star.

Mrs Geriatrix was nominated alongside Bavarian Beauty and Winter Cloud for the Equus title and was a popular winner for the Magical Lady Syndicate (Nom: Natalie Turner), whose members must believe that racing is an easy game!

Trained by multiple SA Champion trainer Sean Tarry, Mrs Geriatrix posted an unbeaten 5 race win streak last season, including the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship, Gr2 WSB SA Fillies Nursery and Gr2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper on Hollywoodbets Durban July Day for earnings of R1 025 000.

The Cape Fillies Guineas has not been an easy scalp for raiders.

Mike de Kock won it with Majmu (2014) and Rumya (2012), while KZN-based David Payne registered a double with Toccato(1999) and Hoeberg (2000). Prior to that Geoff Woodruff won the fairer sex classic with Igreja in 1997. All of those away winners were imports.
