Princess Lands Her Fifth G1 Win

Sean's star charge, and South Africa's reigning Horse Of The Year, Princess Calla bounced back to winning ways when she ran out an impressive winner of the G1 City Of Cape Town Majorca Stakes at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.

In claiming the 2024 Majorca Stakes, Princess Calla picked up the 12th win of her career and made it G1 win number five. The champion daughter of Flower Alley has now won top level races in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, with Princess Calla having won G1 races over distances ranging from 1200m to 1800 metres.

Under a canny ride from Richard Fourie, the six-year-old raced well off the pace early on in Saturday's 1600m contest, before Richard bought Princess Calla with strong late run down the outside of the Kenilworth track.

From there, it was a matter of who would run second, with Princess Calla romping home to win impressively by three and a quarter lengths, and quash all doubts about her enthusiasm for racing.

Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Princess Calla is owned by Mario Ferreira. The charismatic bay, also named Equus Champion Older Female for 2022-2023, has now won a staggering 11 graded races and remains one of the star attractions on the South African turf!

The Tarry yard were perhaps unlucky not to win a second feature race on Saturday, with Sean's charge Thunderstruck narrowly beaten into second in the G1 Pongracz Cape Flying Championship and the yard's Tail Of The Comet appearing desperately unlucky in the Cape Racing Gold Rush.
