SA Derby Glory For Legend Of Arthur
Legend Of Arthur
Sean Tarry Racing enjoyed a wonderful day at Turffontein on Saturday. Not only did the yard's classy three-year-old Legend Of Arthur win Saturday's G1 TAB SA Derby, but the yard also sent out promising filly Green Diamond to win the G2 TAB SA Nursery on the same card.
In landing the 2025 SA Derby, Legend Of Arthur joined Pomodoro (2012), Legal Eagle (2015), and Al Sahem (2017) as Derby winners to have come out of the Tarry stable.
A son of the much-missed Lancaster Bomber, Legend Of Arthur had caught the eye when running on from nowhere to finish a creditable third in the recent G1 TAB SA Classic, and he duly went on to claim his first G1 success on Saturday.
Under a well-judged ride from Richard Fourie, the Drakenstein Stud-bred colt came with another strong run on Saturday, which saw Legend Of Arthur get up close to home and win by a neck.
The beautifully bred Legend Of Arthur, a half-brother to 2018 SA Derby winner Hero's Honour, races for Bruce and Jo Gardner, Mark Currie, Mr Millar and Drakenstein.
Green Diamond
Drakenstein Stud also bred and owned the exciting filly Green Diamond, who showed her class when downing male rivals to claim Saturday's G2 TAB SA Nursery. Under Craig Zackey, the two-year-old daughter of Gimmethegreenlight stormed home to win impressively by two lengths.
Runner-up in the Listed Wilgerbosdrift Ruffian Stakes on debut, Green Diamond looks to be a very exciting prospect. The filly is out of the Trippi mare Lesedi La Rona, winner of the Listed Perfect Promise Sprint and a half-sister to the dam of this season's G3 Cape Classic winner Great Plains, as well as the smart Tarry-trained filly Gerbera.
The Tarry stable looked a little unlucky not to win a third graded feature on Saturday. Not only did recent G1Wilgerbosdrift H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Cosmic Speed finish an unlucky second in the G2 TAB Hawaii Stakes, but G3 Betway Fillies Mile winner World Of Alice stormed up late for second in Saturday's G2 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks, when beaten just a short-head.
The yard also saddled promising filly One Fine Winter to run a good second in the G2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Nursery.
