Thunder Strikes Again

Thunderstruck Sean Tarry Race Horse, South Africa

The Tarry yard enjoyed a big day at Turffontein on Saturday, when Sean’s charge Thunderstruck ran out a convincing winner of the G1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint (1000m) at Turffontein.

In the process, the four-year-old son of Rafeef stamped his claims to the award of Equus Champion Sprinter for 2023-2024.

The classy Thunderstruck, winner of the G1 Gold Medallion at two, was given a superbly timed ride by Richard Fourie on Saturday.

Richard bought his mount through with a sustained late run which saw Thunderstruck get up close home to down the game front running Golden Sickle and win by a long neck.

Sean and his team have done a wonderful job in bringing Thunderstruck back from a successful campaign in Cape Town to win Gauteng’s premier sprint.

Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, Thunderstruck races for Wilgerbosdrift, and he looks sure to retire to stud there when his racing days are done.

The speedy colt, winner of the G2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes last time out, has now won seven of 17 starts and looked a little unlucky not to win the G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship back in January.

Thunderstruck’s inform sire Rafeef, himself a son of the Tarry trained champion National Colour, had a fantastic day on Saturday with Rafeef also responsible for the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks winner Frances Ethel.
